Being Shy

Being shy is not easy, you can lose opportunities and is a lot more harder to make friends. You see I have been shy for as long as I can remember, though I did have a little bit of confidence as I could stand up for myself and have fun outside with my friends. But since I moved to Ayr it had shattered the last of my confidence. I found it harder to start or  get involved in conversations and it had taken me months to make friends, Going to secondary school had only made things worse, I started getting picked on for my natural hair colour, my weight and my shyness. It never helped when I started walking around the school in S5 alone because I felt like I was invisible in the group of friends I was hanging about with no one around the school corridors, also considering my home problems had gotten worse. Which has only made me hold back and not just go for it and be this confident person that I want to be. If I was not shy I would have progressed in childcare, but I don't regret the courses I went in after that like Step into Learning where it had helped me with my confidence. I am quiet, that is who I am, I wish in the future I can push myself to be confident. In a way what I am saying is don't let things hold you back, not even your shyness or the fear that college is going to be the same as school, because it's not really and for me college was better than school.

Interviewing Sara Turkington

1)   What do you do as an LDA?

The role bridges between enhancing essential skills development and pastoral guidance. There’s a number of different classes which we might take for an hour or two depending of level of course and the sessions we do with our students, can be on for example equality and diversity. And health and well-being and employability. The 1 to 1 support with students involves talking about any issues they might have whether inside college or outside college.
 2)   What is the purpose of your job?

The purpose of my job is to develop essential skills, as well a pastoral guidance. This means we support the retention, achievement, progression of students. We work with curriculum/programmes team to support our students successfully of this course.

3)   How do you as an LDA help students?
I think a big part of our job is to listen as a way of supporting our students to be successful. That might mean we sign post them to other organisations or make referrals to our counselling service.

4)   What are the ups and downs of your job?

Getting to know students and building a good relationship with them and feeling like I have contributed in some way to making their college life a good one.
Only so much help and support we can give and lots of our students have personal issues.

5)   What would you have done differently?

As I was doing a lesson on discrimination, I did a experiment with the students. But looking back I had split my former step class into two groups by eye colour. I had treated the blue eyed group differently from the group that had mixed eye colour. At the end of experimenting with the students I had spoken to the students about it and a few students had gotten upset about the experiment. So I would be more sensitive and more aware of student’s previous experience.

6)   How many years have you been working as an LDA?

This is my 4th year.

Clic

My name is Fiona Smith and I am the Senior Education Support Advisor for the CLIC Service.

We provide a range of support services for students with additional support needs and disabilities. These range from:

·         Specific learning disabilities (e.g. Dyslexia)

·         Mental health difficulties (e.g. Depression)

·         Physical disabilities (e.g. wheelchair users)

·         Health problems (e.g. epilepsy, chronic fatigue)

·         Asperger’s syndrome and Autistic Spectrum Disorder

·         Visual and hearing impairments

There are several ways you can access support: By ticking the box on your Application Form or enrolment form OR By coming along for an appointment once you have started your course

My advice would be, if you are thinking about support, the earlier you do so the better.  When you do, you will be given an appointment with an Education Support Advisor who will meet with you on a 1:1 basis in confidence and discuss your needs with you. From here we will be able to work out what the next steps should be – if you require a support plan and what strategies are recommended for you. We also liaise with other support and teaching staff and aim to work together with them to best support you.

Examples of support can include one or more of the following:

-       In class support (e.g. support with note taking, staying on task)

-       Study Strategy Support

-       Dyslexia Screening

-       Signposting to other internal and external support

-       Training in Assistive Software  (e.g. mystudybar)

-       Drop in support

-       Disabled Student Allowance application (for Advanced level students)

This is a confidential, professional and approachable service. It is tailored to you. Support is reviewed and adapted as required throughout the year, encouraging you to be as independent as you can be. Some of these strategies may make the difference in helping you survive as a student!

If you would like to speak to someone about the help we can offer you can do so in confidence. Even if you are unsure about the support you require but would like to find out more, please call, email or pop in for an appointment.

Phone: 01292 293 553

Or pop in to CLIC for an appointment and ask for Fiona.
